SB 1449 Marijuana Decrim Law PASSES into Law in CA

SB 1449 becomes law! Effective 1/1/2011

Great news Sea Mac:

SB 1449, a bill authored by Sen. Mark Leno, was signed into law by Gov. Schwarzenegger yesterday! SB 1449 reclassifies possession of under an ounce of marijuana from a misdemeanor to a civil infraction. This sensible change will ensure that responsible adults are not labeled as criminals for possessing less than an ounce of a substance that is proven safer than alcohol. Thank you to all who contacted your legislators and the governor urging them to support this important policy change.

Gov. Schwarzenegger signed the bill a month after the legislation was sent to him. SB 1449 previously passed the Senate 21 – 13

and the Assembly 43 – 33

. Both the Judicial Council of California and the state District Attorneys Association supported SB 1449, citing the judicial cost savings associated with changing the penalty as their motivation.

Finally, with only four and a half weeks until the election, it’s about time I respectfully remind you to get out and vote! The polls are showing that Prop 19

— the measure to make adults’ possession and cultivation of marijuana legal and to allow its taxed and regulated sales — is holding an encouraging, but slight, lead

. Other races will also have a huge impact on marijuana policy in the state; Los Angeles County Attorney Steve Cooley — who maintains that all sales of medical marijuana are illegal — is the GOP’s candidate for attorney general!

Every vote counts. If you have not already registered, or have questions about your voter registration, please visit the California Secretary of State’s website

. If you have not registered to vote, you have until October 18, 2010 to do so!

Thanks so much for all your time and energy. It sure is appreciated.

Last chance: Call Gov. Schwarzenegger now; ask him to sign SB 1449 into law!

Quote
Dear Sea Mac:

Gov. Schwarzenegger has until tomorrow, September 30, to sign or veto SB 1449, which would reclassify possession of under an ounce of marijuana from a misdemeanor to a civil infraction. If you have not done so, please call Gov. Schwarzenegger’s office today and ask him to sign this sensible legislation into law.

This important bill would prevent otherwise law abiding adults from being branded criminals for simply possessing a substance proven safer than alcohol. Please ask Gov. Schwarzenegger to sign this bill into law.

Also, we’d be remiss if we didn’t remind you to register to vote if you have not yet done so. Please visit of the Secretary of State webpage to find out how to register. Registration is open until October 18. Prop 19 — which would allow adults to possess and cultivate marijuana and would allow cities to tax and regulate marijuana sales — is polling at a steady, but close, lead of 49% — 42%. Every vote counts, so please register and get out and vote yes on Prop 19!

Thank you all so much for your tireless efforts in helping reform marijuana policy in the Sunshine State.

Dear Sea Mac:

Exciting news out of Sacramento! Yesterday, August 30, the California Assembly passed SB 1449, which would reclassify possession of under an ounce of marijuana from a misdemeanor to a civil infraction. According to the California Assembly Clerk’s office, the unofficial vote count was 43 in support to 33 in opposition. The bill had previously passed the California Senate 21-13. SB 1449 will now make its way to Gov. Schwarzenegger’s desk for his signature or veto. Please call Gov. Schwarzenegger’s office today and ask him to sign this sensible legislation into law.

This important bill would prevent otherwise law abiding adults from being branded criminals for simply possessing a substance proven safer than alcohol. Please ask Gov. Schwarzenegger to sign this bill into law.
